Pediatric MRI Case Study: Clear Abdominal Imaging Fast

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the pediatric abdomen requires high spatial resolution, robust motion management, and consistent coverage across a large field of view. Achieving these goals quickly in younger children, with or without sedation, remains a technical and workflow challenge.

This case highlights the use of Snuggle our dedicated pediatric flexible MR coil in a 5-year-old patient imaged on a 3.0T system, demonstrating how coil geometry and acquisition protocol can be optimized for diagnostic performance.

Abdominal Imaging Methods:

A 58-month-old patient underwent abdominal MRI on a 3.0T MAGNETOM Vida system (Siemens Healthineers) using syngo MR XA20 software.

Imaging was performed with the Snuggle pediatric flexible MR coil in an anterior configuration. A fast TSE sequence optimized for tissue contrast and motion robustness was acquired. Key parameters included voxel size 0.9 × 0.9 × 4.0 mm, matrix 304 × 304 × 50, TR/TE 6278/92 ms, echo train length 43, and acquisition time of ~177 seconds.

Image Quality and Performance

The sequence yielded diagnostic-quality abdominal imaging with fine in-plane resolution and balanced signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

  • High spatial resolution:

0.9 mm in-plane voxel size improved visualization of abdominal organs.

  • Optimized SNR:

4.0 mm slice thickness preserved adequate signal across the full abdomen.

  • Motion robustness:

Full sampling and extended echo train length mitigated motion-related artifacts, critical in younger patients.

  • Efficiency:

Exam completed in ~3 minutes, minimizing sedation risk and reducing the likelihood of repeat scans.

Coil Configuration and Workflow Considerations

The anterior configuration of the dedicated pediatric coil enabled:

  • Stable coverage of upper and lower abdomen without repositioning

  • Uniform SNR across large fields of view

  • Efficient workflow with reduced patient handling

  • Improved patient tolerance due to ergonomic fit

Clinical Implications

Use of Snuggle a dedicated pediatric flexible MR coil substantially improves abdominal MRI by:

  • Reducing coil-to-skin distance, thereby enhancing SNR and image uniformity

  • Allowing clearer visualization of organ margins and fluid interfaces

  • Supporting reliable fat suppression for abdominal protocols

  • Providing diagnostic-quality imaging within a shorter acquisition window

Conclusion

Optimized coil geometry and anterior positioning enabled stable coverage of the pediatric abdomen with consistent SNR and improved workflow efficiency. Dedicated pediatric coils provide clear diagnostic advantages by enhancing image uniformity, organ margin delineation, and fat suppression, while supporting shorter, motion-robust exams in younger patients. Such improvements support diagnostic confidence while reducing reliance on sedation.
